As reported by the New York Post, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently unveiled significant changes to the company’s work policies, including a stricter return-to-office (RTO) mandate and alterations to sabbatical benefits. These announcements have sparked considerable discussion and concern among employees.
Effective immediately, Uber employees are now required to work from the office at least three days a week, an increase from the previous two-day mandate. Additionally, the eligibility period for a paid month-long sabbatical has been extended from five to eight years of service. These policy shifts aim to enhance in-person collaboration and overall company performance.
During a company-wide meeting, some employees expressed frustration, particularly those who had already planned sabbaticals under the previous guidelines. Concerns were raised about the potential impact on work-life balance and whether the changes might be a strategy to encourage voluntary departures. Khosrowshahi addressed these concerns directly, stating that the goal is to improve company operations and not to push employees out. He emphasized that those dissatisfied with the new policies have ample opportunities elsewhere, reflecting confidence in the broader job market.
To support the increased in-office presence, Uber plans to expand its office space by 700,000 square feet in San Francisco and Seattle, with completion expected by 2026. The company also confirmed that employee attendance will be monitored to ensure compliance with the new RTO policy
These developments at Uber highlight the ongoing challenges and debates surrounding remote work policies in the tech industry. As companies navigate the balance between flexibility and in-person collaboration, employee feedback and adaptability remain crucial components of successful policy implementation.
These developments build on Uber’s earlier decision to increase in-office work to three days per week. Read our coverage of that announcement here.
